What To Expect:
Arrival:
- The main entrance to La Fortuna Waterfall is just a 10-minute drive from downtown. Upon arrival, you’ll find a spacious parking lot and bathroom facilities. Note that there are no additional bathroom facilities once you enter the trail.
Check-In:
- At the main entrance, let the staff know you have a reservation. They will confirm your name and provide you with a wristband. Before starting the trail, you can visit the bathrooms and the on-site restaurant, “Rio Lounge,” which offers drinks like milkshakes, smoothies, cocktails, and a variety of food options including appetizers, salads, and snacks. This could be a good option when returning.
First Stop – The Lookout:
- The first point of interest is the lookout platform, offering a distant view of the waterfall. This is a great spot to take in the location and snap some photos.
The Trail:
- After the lookout, head down the trail. To the left, you’ll find a flatter, concrete path designed as a short circuit for those with mobility issues. However, to reach the waterfall, you’ll need to take the steps to the right. If you’re a fast walker and the trail isn’t crowded, you can reach the waterfall in about 10 minutes. Most visitors take 15 to 20 minutes walking while enjoying the scenery along the way. The trail consists of 530 concrete steps, with a few bridges along the route. Be aware that the trail can be slippery, especially after rain, so wear appropriate footwear.
At the Waterfall:
- Once you arrive, there’s a platform on the right offering an excellent vantage point for photos and soaking in the atmosphere. From the platform, you can descend closer to the waterfall. If conditions allow, you can swim at the base, but be cautious—the rocks can be slippery or unstable. Please respect all signs and avoid restricted areas for your safety.
Swimming Options:
- If you prefer calmer waters, there are natural pools a short distance downstream where you can swim in more tranquil conditions.
Relax and Refresh:
- This is a great time to enjoy any snacks you’ve brought and take in the surroundings.
The Return:
- When you’re ready to head back up, take your time and use the benches along the trail to rest if needed. While some can make the climb in about 10 minutes, be mindful of children and elderly visitors who may need more time.
