Insider Advice for Exploring Central Guanacaste

Exploring New Beaches.

Punta Pelencho (Brasilito Norte)
If you love exploring new beaches, venture to Punta Pelencho, also known as Brasilito Norte. Here, you will be treated to a beautiful ocean view, including Loros Island—a small rocky island with a few trees and a small beach at low tide. This place is ideal for surf fishing, sunbathing, and swimming.

Penca Beach
Visit Penca Beach, a white sand bay with Isla Chocoyas to the right and Isla Plata far in the distance to the left. Penca has one of the best snorkeling spots in the area. Bring your own snorkeling gear or pay for a guided tour that will take you to the north side of the beach, where you can, weather and ocean conditions permitting, spot puffer fish, lots of tropical fish, eels, and, if you are lucky, you might see the Green sea turtle and larger schools of fish. Penca is one of the most beautiful beaches in Guanacaste and great for swimming and snorkeling.

Prieta Beach
Next to Penca (within walking distance) is Prieta Beach, a beautiful black sand beach that also offers good snorkeling and sunbathing. You can drive to any of these beaches and explore the second one by foot.

Dantita Beach
Another, more remote beach is Dantita Beach. From Danta Beach, when the tide is low, you can walk around 10 minutes on the sand to reach this tiny beach that offers more privacy and silence (depending on the season). If the tide is high, you must walk a steep trail on Las Catalinas property to get in and out of Dantita Beach.

Other Beaches to Explore
Exploring by Catamaran, ATVs, Jet Skis, or Pangas, besides these lesser-known beaches, there are many others to explore that you can access via catamaran, ATVs, jet skis, or skiff boats (aka Pangas). Examples include Playa Amor, Minas, Bahía de los Piratas, Sugar beach, Zapotal and many more!

Popular Beaches in Central Guanacaste.

Conchal Beach
You cannot leave this area without spending some time enjoying the most popular beaches of Central Guanacaste, including Conchal Beach, ideal for snorkeling, kayaking, and swimming. Here, you will find lots of beautiful seashells. Admire them, take pictures, but please don’t take them home. Shells provide habitats for marine animals, such as hermit crabs, and contribute to beach stability by breaking down into sand. Once broken down, the minerals in shells, including calcium carbonate, are used by animals such as mollusks (including snails, clams, and oysters), corals, and some types of algae to create their shells and other structures. This helps maintain the natural cycle and supports diverse marine life.

Flamingo Beach
Flamingo is the gem of the area, a white sand beach with good snorkeling on the south edge (at mid tide), and ideal for kayaking, SUP, swimming, and sunbathing. Enjoy drinks and snacks during sunset at Coco Loco restaurant or 12 O’clock Somewhere at the Margaritaville Hotel. The Marina of Flamingo is located within walking distance from Flamingo Beach, where you can access fishing and catamaran tours we recommend or simply enjoy the restaurants, cafes, and ice cream shops.

Potrero Beach
Potrero Beach is a long beach good for running during low tide. Sunsets from Potrero Beach are also spectacular. If you are curious about exploring Las Catalinas town and Sentido Norte Restaurant and Bar, then Danta Beach during low tide is a great place to rent kayaks, SUP, and mountain bikes at Pura Vida Ride, the best outdoor outfitters in Las Catalinas.

Grande Beach and Tamarindo Beach
Some other beaches you should consider (covered in another article) are Grande Beach and Tamarindo Beach, both great for surfing, with the latter being the major beach town nearby, offering many options for hotels, bars, restaurants, shops, and farmers markets.

Getting Here:

Main Route

From LIR International Airport:
Start at Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport (LIR) and head southwest on Route 21. Continue on the main road (Route 21) for approximately 30 kilometers toward Belén. Once there, turn right onto Route 155 and continue on the same road for 24 kilometers until you reach the intersection with Route 180. You will pass through the town of Huacas. Turn right onto Route 180 heading towards Brasilito, Flamingo, Potrero, or Las Catalinas.

Alternate Route (Dry Season Only)
During the dry season, there’s an alternate route called the Monkey Trail that saves you 25 minutes. This shortcut crosses a small river and goes through a winding, narrow but paved road. Drive cautiously and avoid driving at night in Costa Rica as signage and infrastructure are limited.

Shuttles and Rental Cars

Private Transfers

For airport transportation, private transfers are recommended to ensure timely pickup and direct travel to your destination without delays.

Renting a Car

If you intend to explore independently and spend significant time at the beach, renting a car is the most convenient option.

Organized Tours

If you plan to join several organized tours during your stay, a rental car is often unnecessary since most excursions include transportation or offer it for an additional fee. For local outings to breweries and restaurants, taxis arranged at the front desk of your hotel or renting golf carts can provide an easy and reliable way to get around.

Visiting Other Destinations

If you are visiting other destinations in Costa Rica besides the Central Guanacaste Coast, you can either book private transfers or rent a car. If you are visiting several destinations and value independence, we recommend renting a car. However, if you are visiting only one or two destinations in Costa Rica, booking transfers might be the best option since you don’t have to worry about insurance, driving on Costa Rican roads, and finding parking or gas stations.

Partnered Services

Whether you prefer rental cars or transfers, we can support you. For rental cars, we’ve partnered with Alamo and Adobe Rental Cars, the two most reliable companies in Costa Rica. They bring you extra benefits through Link Expeditions that you cannot get by simply visiting their websites or desk, including complimentary baby seats, complimentary booster seats, free additional drivers, discounted rates for extras such as GPS and racks, and rates discounted by 5% to 9% compared to their standard rates.
